How to Join Merchant Navy After 12th

 

After class 12, you are eligible to study the following merchant navy courses:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  • B.Sc. Nautical Science
  • B.E. Marine Engineering
  • B.E. Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering
  • B.E. Petroleum Engineering
  • B.E. Mechanical Engineering
  • B.E. Harbour & Ocean Engineering
  • B.E. Electrical & Electronics Engineering
  • B.Sc. Marine Catering.

 

To join as an Engineer:

  1. BE/B Tech Marine Engineering (4 Years)

 

To join as a Deck Officer:

  1. BSc Nautical Science (3 Years)
  2. Diploma in Nautical Science (Leads to a BSc Nautical Science. Duration is 1 year)

 

To join as a Rating after Class X or XII:

  1. Pre Sea GP Rating Course (6 Months)

 

To join in the catering department after Class X or XII:

  1. Maritime Catering Course (6 Months)
  2. BSc in Marine Catering (3 Years)

 

Eligibility Criteria:

 

  • For Deck cadet and Engine cadet: 10+2 with PCM 60%.

 

  • For Deck cadet and Engine cadet: 10+2 with English 50%.

 

  • Application for the exam can be done online. Along with the application form, applicants have to submit a brief summary of 100 words that states why they wish to apply for Merchant Navy.

 

  • This exam is an MCQ pattern test spanning over subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, English, General Knowledge and Reasoning.

 

  • AGE: The minimum age is 17 years and the maximum is 25 years to be eligible for examinations pertaining to the merchant navy. As per the Government rules, the maximum age relaxation for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes is 5 years.  

 

  • PHYSICAL FITNESS: Physical fitness is of utmost importance for a career at sea. A certificate of fitness from a registered medical practitioner is mandatory for admission into a course. Candidates with disability aren’t eligible for admission into courses with regard to the merchant navy. This hasn’t much to do with discrimination as such as it is supremely important to be fully able in carrying out the duties on board a merchant ship.

 

  • EYESIGHT:6/12 in each eye or 6/9 in better eye and 6/18 in other eye for distant unaided vision. Color blindness in any case is absolutely NOT PERMITTED. 

 

  • Both genders are allowed to join the merchant navy. In fact, female candidates are encouraged. Individuals ought to be unmarried at the time of joining the course. For the purpose of the application, the board pursued in Class XII (and Class X in some cases) must be one that is a recognized board as per the Government of India.

 

Entrance Exams for Merchant Navy:

 

After completion of 12th class, interested candidates can appear for the Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test (IMU CET) or the All India Merchant Navy Entrance Exam. This exam is generally conducted in the month of May. The other exams that can also serve as a gateway for Marine Engineering are JEE, MERI Entrance Exam, TIMSAT.

 

How to Join Merchant Navy After 10th
